Palm Oil ActionPalm Oil Action

The Palm Oil Action Group is concerned about oil palm plantation development and the associated deforestation in Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.

The last few years has seen an amazing increase in people's awareness about the danger of palm oil, both to themselves and to the planet, and a number of successes on the front to say goodbye to all unsustainable palm oil in the future - read about them here.

In 2009 we ran a successful peaceful consumer action campaign against Woolworths and KFC, which saw some great outcomes and reminded us that consumer power is indeed powerful. Check out all the action here.

2010 has seen exciting moves forward in relation to ensuring the mandatory labelling of Palm Oil. It is possible that by the end of the year we could see mandatory labelling of palm oil on foodstuffs. See here for details.

And all of these successes are down to you -'ordinary' people everywhere taking a stand against the insanity that is unsustainable palm oil. Click here to find out how you can continue to help.

Killing of Orangutans for Palm Oil Development

The (Indonesian) Forestry Department's conservation director, Toni Soehartono, admitted the practice was widespread but urged understanding of its motivations.

"I'm sure that happens -- in order to establish palm oil land companies clear forests, which causes the death of fauna such as orang-utans and gibbons in Kalimantan, and elephants, tigers and others, including orang-utans, in Sumatra," Dr Soehartono said.
"But all development requires sacrifice -- we just have to make it equal to some extent."

WE CARE BECAUSE :

  • Rainforest destruction is still out of control. ( Indonesia is included in the Guinness Book of Records as the country which pursues the highest annual rate of deforestation. Currently an area of forest equal to 300 soccer fields is being destroyed every hour in the country) more
  • Fires are burning across Borneo and Sumatra, fuelling global warming (Indonesia is the third highest carbon emitter due to peatland fires.) more
  • Both orangutan species are within 20 years of extinction in the wild (killed daily in palm
    oil plantations) more
  • Social conflict and human-rights’ abuses are commonly associated with oil palm expansion more
  • Severe environmental pollution is associated with palm oil processing more
  • Lack of labeling means lack of choice in consuming palm oil more
  • Australians consume an average of 10kg of Palm Oil per person each year
Palm Oil Action
The relevant companies have verified that all of the products displayed as at 3/4/07 contain palm oil or a palm oil derivative.
Even though these products contain palm oil or palm oil derivatives, the labelling isn't clear. Consumers have a right to know if the oil used in a product is contributing to the destruction of rainforests and the slaughter of wildlife. Insist on knowing if the vegetable oil used is palm oil from Indonesia or Malaysia and if it has been grown sustainably. Food manufacturers can find other ways of making these products however we can't find other ways of making orangutans.

Our aim is to stop the clearing of critical rainforest ecosystems for use as palm oil plantations.
